What is Sorensis aiming to do?
Sorensis is committed to improving the quality of life in animals by providing versatile solutions to unmet therapeutic needs. We are developing cutting-edge solutions that simplify livestock production, improve animal welfare, productivity and sustainability.
Current projects
Sorensis is currently working to develop the world’s first practical, non-surgical, long-term contraceptive product for use in female cattle. Avoiding unwanted pregnancy in beef cattle is a long-standing unmet need for the global beef industry. Contraception eliminates the additional nutritional demands of pregnancy and lactation, allowing cull heifers and cows to be more efficiently finished. This procedure would also provide a painless alternative to spaying (surgical sterilisation).
Sorensis is collaborating with Pendant Biosciences, a leader in the development of next-generation polymer technology for life science and animal health, to develop a polymer-based implant, which will be situated under the skin of the ear. It contains a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH), which blocks signals from the brain to the ovary which prevents the ovulation process. Early studies indicate the product will provide effective contraception for at least 12 months.
If successful, this technology will provide significant animal welfare, productivity, efficiency and sustainability benefits to the Australian beef industry. Improving animal welfare and sustainability are two of the cornerstones to the Beef Sustainability Framework. This technology will also have significant appeal to beef producers through North America and South America.
Sorensis will develop shorter-acting, longer-acting or removable contraceptive implants will be developed in the future. This technology is also applicable to other production and companion animal species.
